“The Sound of Drums of Myeongnyang in the World”
The shouts of Uldolmok Strait into the sea of the world!
Myeongnyang Battle is remembered in Korean war history as one of the most triumphant victories by Korean naval forces led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin (posthumous title: Chungmugong). The highly respected figure in the Korean government was once demoted to a commoner soldier but was restored to Samdo Sugun Tongjesa (Naval Commander of the Three Provinces). The fact that he was able to defeat 133 Japanese war ships with only 13 war ships is known to be an unprecedented remarkable tactic in the world’s naval war history. After the battle, Admiral Chungmu, too, wrote in his Nanjung ilgi (War Diary) that “the victory was due to luck.”
Under the slogan “The Sound of Drums of Myeongnyang in the World,” the Myeongnyang Battle Festival recreates the famous battle. To make the production realistic and exciting, Jeollanam-do Province receives support from the Korean Navy every year and plans to mobilize some 130 ships owned by fishers in the Haenam and Jindo-gun areas and 1,300 passengers. Visitors to the festival will witness the realistic reenactment of Myeongnyang Battle, as if watching an exciting soccer match at the World Cup Stadium!
