The Miracle Sea Road on Jindo Island has long been renowned the world over for its mystery wherein the ocean’s bottom surfaces as a path measuring about 2.8km long and about 40m wide due to the rise and fall of tide between Hoedong-ri, Gogun-myeon and Modo Island, Uisin-myeon. Every year, hundreds of thousands of tourists come to watch the phenomenon, or “miracle” that takes about one hour during which the sea completely reveals its bottom. The celebration also comes with many welcome events showcasing folk arts and culture native to Jindo.
The Miracle Sea Road, known as the modern-day “Miracle of Moses,” came to be known in 1975 when French Ambassador to Korea Pierre Lande witnessed the phenomenon while sightseeing on Jindo Island and introduced it in a French newspaper. The Miracle Sea Road Festival kicks off with an ancestral rite commemorating Grandmother Ppong, the legendary heroine of a folktale, and features performances of State-designated Intangible Culture such as Minyo (Folk Song), Namdo Deullorae (Farmers' Song of Jeollanam-do), Jindo Dasiraegi (Dasiraegi Play of Jindo), and Jindo Ssitgimgut (Purification Ritual of Jindo) as well as elegy and Bungnori (traditional drum performance). There will be Jindo’s own folk performing arts, Ganggangsullae (Circle Dance), to please all visitors from Korea and abroad, in addition to popular hands-on experiences such as fishing events to harvest fish or clams after the tide ebbed and tasting events featuring the traditional Hongju liquor of Jindo.
·Origin of the Festival | Once upon a time, a man named Son Dong-ji was on his way to exile on Jejudo Island but was cast away by a storm. He ended up in Hodong (today’s Hoedong Village) and started a village, but villagers often suffered from tiger attacks. One day when villagers were in a hurry to escape to Modo Island opposite the village, they forgot to take Grandmother Ppong along.
Left behind all alone, Grandmother Ppong prayed to the Dragon King of the Ocean every day to see her family again. One night, the King appeared in her dream and said, “I shall bestow a rainbow above the sea tomorrow so that you can cross the sea.” The next day she went out to the beach closest to Modo Island and prayed again. There, she found a split path between Hodong Village and Modo Island.
Through the split path, villagers on Modo Island came back to Hodong sounding gongs and bells to find Grandmother Ppong, but, too exhausted, she died after saying, “My prayers to see the sea open and see you again were answered, so there’s nothing more I can ask for.”
